Why do travelers choose this tour?
The cultural practitioners of the Oahu Experience strive for an immersive and authentic luau experience unlike any other in Hawaii. Instead of your typical commercial Hawaiian luau where guests are just observers, here, you become an integral part of the luau itself.Try many different cultural activities including preparing fish for the imu (underground oven), learning how to make lei and other adornments using fresh Hawaiian ti leaves, and pounding steamed taro into poi.
Many guests visiting Hawaii have never tried kava, and now they can partake in a kava ceremony where you will see how the powdered root is prepared, the cultural significance of the ceremony, and the many positive effects of the beverage.
Whereas most people will only be able to see fireknife dancing as an audience members, guests to the Oahu Experience will learn the basics of Samoan fireknife dancing and drumming from highly-trained performers and experts.
How does it work?
Once you arrive at the Ko’olauloa Foundation, follow the directions to the parking area before walking over to the luau grounds located in the heart of a scenic clearing. After you are greeted by a traditional Hawaiian chant, try a variety of Hawaiian and Polynesian cultural activities before enjoying a delicious and authentic luau dinner. Your evening concludes with a luau performance where you will also become a part of the show!Local expert tips
- The luau is located in an area inaccessible by public transportation and difficult to navigate by rideshare or taxi. Guests planning on attending this luau should rent a car to avoid any transportation issues.
- Spend the day on the North or East Shore of Oahu before finishing up with this immersive Hawaiian luau. Explore Haleiwa Town and Kahuku on the North Shore, or spend the day at East Shore beaches in Waimanalo and Kailua.
- This activity has limited availability, and will sometimes only operate one day in a month. Be sure to book as early as possible to ensure that you secure your spot for this amazing Hawaiian luau.
- Recommend attire: Since this is an interactive and hands-on luau, you will want to leave your fancy clothes behind, and dress comfortably so that you can sit on the mats on the ground, practice fireknife dancing, pound poi, and experience other activities.
- Recommend items to bring: Save the driving directions in case cellular reception becomes limited, and bring a smart phone or camera to capture the memories!

Schedule
Check-in at Ko'olauloa Foundations

After you locate the parking area, take a leisurely stroll to the Oahu Experience check-in area located at a white tent within a large clearing. Your evening continues with a variety of authentic Hawaiian and Polynesian cultural activities, a delicious dinner, and a wide array of performances.

Once you arrive at the luau grounds, you will be welcomed by the Oahu Experience 'ohana (family) with a traditional Hawaiian 'oli (chant). This chant is called 'Oli Aloha, and has been used for generations as a way to greet guests, friends, and family, and is a memorable way to begin your luau.

Learn how to wrap and salt fish in freshly picked Hawaiian ti leaves before they cook in an imu, or rock-lined underground oven. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to make long-lasting ti leaf lei, and even use a heavy poi pounding stone to make fresh pa'i'ai and poi with taro & water.

Known for its calming effects and communal significance, kava is a traditional drink made from the roots of the kava plant, a root that is native to the islands of the South Pacific. The active compounds in kava, called kavalactones, are said to promote relaxation while reducing stress and anxiety.

There is nothing quite as thrilling as seeing an expert spin and throw knives that are engulfed in flames, and what better way to experience this iconic Samoan performance art than learning how to perform the siva afi. Start off with unlit blunted instruments, and work your way up to ignition!

Sit down for a delicious dinner handcrafted by Fat Poi, a local favorite known for their authentic and tasty Hawaiian and island-style cuisine. Ingredients are selected for top freshness and quality, and brought together for a mouthwatering meal. You will even eat the fish you prepared earlier!

Not only will you see incredible cultural experts perform, but unlike any other luau in Hawaii, you'll also become a part of the show! Show off your newly-learned drumming and fireknife dancing skills with cultural practitioners who will ensure that you have an amazing & unforgettable time on stage!
