The Smith Family Garden Luau offers two different luau packages, and you can select the one that works best for you and your group.

• Tropical Paradise Garden Luau: Enjoy all that the luau has to offer with a shell lei greeting, guided tram tour of the botanical garden, imu ceremony, a delicious dinner buffet, an open bar with both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and a live luau evening show.
• Smith Family Tropical Garden Luau Show Only: A great option for guests just wanting to experience a luau show, this package includes just the evening show.

Local expert tips

• This activity has limited availability during the week, and books up quickly, so we highly suggest booking your Smith Family Luau tickets at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance, especially during busy seasons like summer and spring break.
• If you would like to have a comprehensive experience before your luau, consider booking the Wailua River Cruise to the Fern Grotto before your Kauai luau. Available at 3:30PM with a 3:00PM departure, this cruise departs from the same location as your luau check-in, and is a great way to begin your luau evening.
• With a fully wheelchair accessible location, the Smith’s Family Luau is a wonderful choice for guests with mobility issues. While there are areas that are covered in grass, you will be able to easily navigate the luau grounds in both a wheelchair or a scooter. Luau employees will also be available to offer assistance if needed as well.
• The luau has a vast buffet dinner with a wide assortment of locally made dishes featuring cuisine that represent the many different cultures in Hawaii. There are also a number of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options available for guests to choose from and enjoy.
• Recommended attire: While there is no Smith Family Luau dress code, resort casual or Aloha wear, with a light jacket or sweater is recommended. Flat shoes are a better option than high heeled shoes since the grounds are uneven with grass.

Pre-show demonstrations

Before the luau show and dinner, guests are invited to watch and participate in a variety of different pre-show cultural activities. It should be noted that these activities are all subject to change and availability depending on the availability of the practitioners.

• Go on a guided tram tour around the 30 acre botanical garden

• Have a hula lesson from a professional dancer
• Watch as a whole roasted pig is unearthed from an imu, or underground Hawaiian oven in a informative ceremony

How to get there?

Located in the Wailua River Marina State Park, the Smith’s Family Garden Luau is located on the “Coconu Coast” of Kauai’s eastern shore, and is easily accessible from all around the island. Guests staying in Lihue and Poipu will have anywhere from a 15 to 30 minute drive to the location, and guests staying in Princeville and Hanalei should allow themselves at least an hour for their drive.

Taxi and rideshare services can be limited at night in Kauai, so please plan accordingly if you would like to use either for your transportation option to the luau.

What is Smith’s Kauai?

60 years ago, Walter Smith Sr. and his wife Emily started a small business to take guests up the Wailua River on a small rowboat with a borrowed outboard motor. After four generations, this family-owned and operated business now includes the Fern Grotto Wailua River Cruise, Smith’s Tropical Paradise botanical and cultural garden, and of course, the Smith Family Garden Luau.

NCL Pride of America Guests

NCL Pride of America ship is usually scheduled to stay overnight in Kauai on Thursday nights. Smith's Luau operates on "ship nights” from February through October. Taxi or rideshare fare is approximately $25 to $30 each way.
