Our guide, Maka, was excellent: entertaining, polite, knowledgeable, etc. He was extremely quick and calm when responding to a high altitude emergency when we reached our high altitudes. I was impressed with the Veltra company with their constant updates, emails reminders, and phone call reminder. I gave "Good" review because it was very cloudy and the star gazing was limited. I would book through this company again and I would do this tour again too.

Mauna Kea Summit Sunset & Stargazing Tour with Dinner - Hawaii Forest & Trail
More than just beautiful!
Reviewed by: Ryan R, 2022/06/04This was our first trip to the Big Island, so of course we wanted to see the summit at Mauna Kea. Our tour guide was Justin- and he was tremendous. He met at pickup location a couple minutes early. He provided a clear outline of what the day would include- and he held to it very closely. On the way to our first stop, He provided a great narration of the volcanic and mythological history of the island. After dinner (and acclimating to elevation for a while) we headed further up the mountain- the safety discussion was very calming, but helpful. The view from the summit was SPECTACULAR. About 10-15 minutes before the actual sunset, sneak to the back side of the area up there, and the SHADOW of Mauna Kea on the clouds looks like another mountain. I am fairly well-travelled, and this was a first for me! After that, we went down to the Start gazing station, and got to see some really cool stuff. Justin's knowledge was superb, enough to engage with a couple college students in our group that studied Astronomy at school. Very impressive. Truly, a great way to see a unique and beautiful piece of the Big Island! Many thanks!

Go see the telescopes
Reviewed by: Polly, 2022/05/29Stefan is a cool guide and got us safely up and down Mauna Kea. It was very cold so I appreciated the ski pants as I came with my own gear and it wasn't enough. The night we ascended was very cloudy so unfortunately no stargazing for us but I mainly wanted to see the telescopes and that was otherworldly. Stefan gave some interesting facts about the telescopes that was appreciated and we got lucky to speak with one of the NASA scientists while up there. There was no rush and we were allotted plenty of time to take pictures and take breaks as the altitude will creep up on you. We were told we'd be refunded $100 for the cloudy skies and I received the refund a couple days later. The sandwich wasn't the best but it was appreciated while up there.

Amazing ride, excellent and enjoyable pilot and guide!

Jamie shared so much of his knowledge of the island with us while we were riding to and from the waterfall for which we were very grateful. The swim at the waterfall was gorgeous and refreshing. A wonderful experience overall and absolutely worth it! Highly recommend!

Truly an out-of-this-world experience!

From start to finish he showed that he was very knowledgeable about the subject at hand and proved to be very courteous towards everyone in the group. The veggie sandwiches that he brought along for us were surprisingly delicious.
The trip itself was amazing and truly a once in a lifetime experience. Naturally I was a little anxious at first considering the high altitude but our tour guide was sure to explain everything in detail and was very considerate. That helped ease my tension a bit.
The day that we left the weather proved to be in our favor and we managed to encapsulate all that this trip had set out to be from the start. The view from the summit was amazing and when we went down to s t a r g a z e once the sun fell the energy from the group was electric.

Dreu is a man of many hats, he’s hilarious and you have to hear it to believe the incredible lungs he has! (Have to join his tour to know what that means )
Many stops we made, random people would join us just to listen to Dreu. And they would remark how funny he is.
We had a coffee farm tour, saw many highlights of volcanoes National park, and did stargazing! It was amazing!

Driving around the island, stopping at the black sand beach and the bakery was super fun. By far the best part though was seeing the volcano at night and the stars. Highly recommend this trip. Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and made a long day super fun.

We all learned a lot about the forests and volcanoes of Hawaii and had a lot of laughs on the way. He modified appropriately between kids and adults. He was even training someone else and he still made everyone feel like a priority. There was a mixup with the food and he went way out of his way to make it right. I was very impressed. My whole family had a really great day.

The best for me was the black sand. Prior to this trip I had never heard of black sand or even that it existed. To sum up the tour, I would go again. It was worth the money I paid for it. There is nothing negative that I could find.

The day seemed like it might not be good. Rainy and windy. But once we were i. The tour bus, our guide Gauge, was informative about the island and the areas we were driving through. He assured us it would be a great night for a sunset and stargazing. Like the mountain heard him, she did not disappoint! The sunset was spectacular, with every picture trumped by the next. Is 40 pictures of a sunset too many? Haha.
And when we got to our stargazing spot, the diamonds in the sky sparkled and gave us a show.
Dress warmly so you can enjoy. They provide gloves, but maybe invest a little bit in some good ones.

Absolutely Brilliant!! A must do on the Big Island.

He was super informative on the history, culture, geology and botany, and that was just on the ride to the summit. It is cold at the top, minus 2 deg Celsius when we were there. However warm jackets and gloves are provided. We took a beanie too which was a good idea.
The sunset is amazing on top of the clouds. We then drove down to 12,000 ft for the stargazing, which was incredible. Travis explained everything very well, and never rushed you. It was probably the best 8 hrs we have spent in Hawaii. Can’t recommend this tour any more highly. Thank you.

Well worth it and would do again!

From pickup onward, Shawn made sure that all guests were comfortable each time and told entertaining and engaging stories the entire time. The drive up the summit was super smooth, and I loved all of the photos! The stargazing took place at a secluded and clear location just below the summit and was accompanied by a funny, expert discussion on how and where to find all of the stars. Finally, loved all of the local food recommendations and super excited to try as many as possible this time as well as in future trips. The highlight of my trip this year!

excellent experience for those with disabilities.

They went above and beyond to make the to her accessible for my daughter who has cerebral palsy and challenges walking. The pilot was phenomenal with his knowledge base and engaging us in answering questions. Doing the early morning tour was also great as we did not have a whole lot of clouds and the weather was great.

Incredible experience

The entire tour was amazing, with incredibly gorgeous views of both the sunset above the clouds and the star filled sky. Gage was very knowledgeable and pointed out many stars and constellations as well as providing many interesting facts. Please heed the advice about bringing layers of clothing. They provide the parka but I also recommend bringing a hat and gloves if possible. The food was also good but make sure to bring water.

Aaron was truly brilliant and super knowledgeable about everything from Hawaiian history to language and culture to geology and astronomy.
