My wife and I went on the Fern Grotto tour on our honeymoon in 1990. We didn't think they'd still be around, after Iniki ravaged Kauai and COVID shut down hundreds of businesses. The hotel where we stayed was gone so we feared there would be nothing left from our initial trip. But when we returned, there were the Smiths, still in business! We loved the informative cruise and especially the lovely traditional Hawaiian music - not the usual pandering with "Aloha Oe" and "Tiny Bubbles," but the real stuff. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this revisit to a highlight of our honeymoon.

Easy and fun activity to do with littles. The boat cruise is lovely and the fern grotto is beautiful. Stroller accessible throughout. Guided commentary on the way to the grotto and live entertainment on the way back. The staff is very kind.

A wonderful, memorable trip

We enjoyed the Wailua River Cruise immensely. Though it was less than two hours, the trip up the Wailua River was beautiful. The narration on the boat was informative and amusing. The Fern Grove at the end of the trip was stunning. Both at the Fern Grove and on the trip back we were entertained with music and hula dancing by charming performers who clearly love sharing these traditions with visitors. I should mention that I have mobility limitations, and the hosts on the boat were most kind and accommodating.

ちょうど良く楽しめるツアー

ツアーの時間の内訳としては、シダの洞窟への移動に片道30分程度、そしての洞窟周辺で30分程度の計1時間半のツアーでした。
子供たちが4歳と1歳9ヶ月だったので、親共々そこまで疲れず楽しめて良かったです。
もちろん川を進む船の中、シダの洞窟にて自然を満喫できます。
また近くにKamalani playgroundという子供たちが遊ぶには良い場所があるので、その点も良かったです。

Great way to spent the day! Perfect for couples, everyone uses a double kayak. The included lunch was nice at the waterfall. Easy hike after the kayak route to the waterfall, any type of shoes or no shoes are doable. Our tour guide Izzy was super friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you !!
Aloha Kristen, Thanks for the 5 stars and for taking the time to share. I agree with all that you said, including that Izzy is great, but some sort of footwear is advisable. We have one seasoned guide that negotiates the rocky often slippery trail shoe less, but again we recommend some sort of aqua shoes or beater tennis shoes. Keep chasing waterfalls. Happy Holidays. Wailua River Kayak Rental & Optional Self-Guided Sacred Falls Hike
Paddleboarding in the rain

My family and I visited in October 2022 and rented paddle boards. We had an amazing paddle up the river which followed a beautiful hike up to the Falls It started raining on our way back but it was still an amazing experience. It was super easy yo rent the boards and they instructed us well on how to position them for travel. Definitely recommend and will hopefully return again.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience renting SUP from us at Kayak Kaua'i. Many way to paddle falls and SUP is a bit more work but fun enough. Our boards are looking a little shabby and we will soon be replacing them with new and fleeter SUP's.

Smith’s Fern Grotto

This boat ride was amazing. The entertainment was very good with Hawaiian hula dancing and singing. When we got to the grotto it was a short easy walk and once again we were entertained at the grotto where Elvis sang in the movie Blue Hawaii. On the trip back down river one of our guides gave us lots of history of the area including places where movies had been filmed.
It was a very pleasant morning and would recommend Smith’s Fern Grotto tours to everyone.

Fun and easy adventure

This cruise was so much fun. It started off with the tour guide walking us through so interesting facts. The staff was really funny. They made you feel comfortable. The hula dancer was really good. When the boat landed at the trail, it was really easy. It’s a good tour for elderly or those that are physically challenged. I say this because the hike is more like a short walk on a maintained path. It was great and very inexpensive.

worth the time and effort!

First, our Guide "G" was fantastic! He made all the difference with his knowledge of Kauai history, and educating us all along the hike and kayaking portion of the trip. Would recommend the earliest departure time of 7:45 if you don't want a lot of crowds both on the water and at the falls. As we were leaving around 11am to hike back to the kayaks, the falls were very crowded and busy, as was trail and the river on our return. Overall, worth the little effort it takes to see this very pretty part of Kauai.
Aloha Carolyn, Or was it Mr T, who was your guide. Regardless, with all confidence I can tell you that all our guides on all our tours, keep it fun, safe and thoughtful. I love the morning departures but the after noon is a nice way to end the evening. Anyway, appreciate the 5 stars and that we are doing a good job. This was an amazing afternoon on a river cruise x the scenery was so beautiful. Smiths team were entertaining and amazing historians they taught us loads about the river and the area round it the Ukelele plying and traditional dance including Hula felt so special. Very relaxing cruise up the river. Beautiful scenery. Very friendly and helpful staff. Also enjoyed the witty sense of humor on the commentaries. The trail is not the best for the elderly and spots on the trail were difficult to maneuver a walker so highly suggest a wheelchair instead, but the scenery was well-worth the trip.

The large deck for viewing was definitely a plus from when I was there back in 2007. Just a little disappointing that the frems were so few. I guess that hurricane did more damage to the environment then I thought.
Music was wonderful as always.
Boat ride also pleasant. Guide giving information about the area along the river was very helpful.
