 A Newcomer

Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation may not have the centuries-old history of some Hawaiian landmarks, but it offers an intriguing narrative for travelers interested in Kona coffee and the region’s agricultural scene. Established around 20 years ago, Mountain Thunder is a relative newcomer compared to some of the long-established Kona coffee farms. Despite being shy of the two-decade mark, it has already made a significant impact on the local coffee industry.

Ideal Location

Nestled on the slopes of the Hualalai volcano at an elevation of over 3,000 feet, Mountain Thunder benefits from a unique “cloud forest” environment. This combination of volcanic soil, mild climate, and ample rainfall contributes to the exceptional quality of their coffee. The plantation’s strategic location allows it to harness these natural advantages, producing some of the finest Kona coffee available.

Commitment to Quality

Mountain Thunder’s dedication to quality is evident in their sourcing methods. The plantation grows coffee on its 12-acre farm while also purchasing cherries (coffee fruit) from other small farmers. By selecting only the best quality beans, they ensure that every cup of Mountain Thunder coffee meets high standards.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many businesses, Mountain Thunder has faced its share of challenges. In 2017, the original owners encountered financial difficulties, leading the company to file for bankruptcy. However, the story didn’t end there. A new owner, John Trowbridge, stepped in to take over the reins. Under his leadership, Mountain Thunder continues to operate and thrive, showing resilience in the face of adversity.

Transparent Sourcing Practices

Mountain Thunder distinguishes itself from some Kona coffee brands by offering transparency in its sourcing practices. While they grow some of their coffee, they also source the best beans from other small farms. This commitment to honesty and quality helps build trust with their customers and sets them apart in the crowded Kona coffee market.

At Present

Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation might be a younger establishment, but it showcases the dedication to quality and innovation within Kona coffee production. Its focus on cloud forest cultivation and commitment to sourcing the best beans make it an interesting stop for travelers eager to learn more about Kona coffee. Despite its relative youth, Mountain Thunder stands as a testament to the vibrant and evolving landscape of Kona coffee farming.
