Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii — A major renovation project is set to begin at the Kilauea Visitor Center (KVC) in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as early as September. This two-year endeavor aims to expand and improve the facility to better serve the growing number of visitors.

Key Details of the Renovation

The renovation will result in the complete closure of the KVC, including its restrooms, water station, and surrounding sidewalks. Visitors should also expect limited parking and reduced services at the KVC and along Crater Rim Drive West during this period. The project contract, which goes out for bid in July, is anticipated to be awarded in the same month.

Temporary Visitor Services

During the closure, the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association store and limited visitor services will be relocated to a temporary visitor contact station near the Kilauea Military Camp’s historic ball field. However, the Volcano House hotel, restaurant, and the Volcano Art Center Gallery will remain open throughout the renovations.

Planned Improvements

Superintendent Rhonda Loh stated, “As a result of the loss of Jaggar Museum due to the 2018 summit collapse of Kilauea volcano, the existing Kilauea Visitor Center is too small to meet the needs of current and future park visitors.” The renovations aim to address these needs by providing:

  • Expanded indoor and outdoor spaces for new exhibits showcasing the park’s rich geology, biology, and Hawaiian culture.
  • A new covered pavilion on the western end of the building.
  • Relocated restrooms to the eastern end of the building, ensuring full accessibility.
  • Expanded interior visitor-use space by converting office areas.
  • Additional interior retail space for the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association store.
  • Bilingual exhibits in Hawaiian and English.

Impact on Visitor Experience

The extensive renovations will significantly impact the visitor experience at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Popular programs like After Dark in the Park and Na Leo Manu will be suspended until the visitor center reopens. Visitors planning trips during the renovation period should stay informed through the park’s website and social media channels for updates on construction and potential disruptions.

Continued Access to Park Attractions

Despite the renovation, key attractions like the Volcano House and the Volcano Art Center Gallery will remain operational. The park encourages visitors to explore these sites and other areas of the park while the KVC undergoes its transformation.
