HAWAII – Hawaiian Airlines has updated its baggage policy, now allowing surfboards, bicycles, and other sports equipment to be checked as standard baggage without extra fees. The change, effective January 8, 2025, applies to all flights in the airline’s network.

Under the revised guidelines, bicycles and windsurfing equipment can weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg), while other sports gear, including surfboards and golf clubs, must not exceed 50 pounds (23 kg). Smaller items, such as baseball equipment and wakeboards, are limited to 62 linear inches (132 cm), while larger equipment, like surfboards and canoes, can measure up to 115 linear inches (292 cm). Items exceeding these dimensions will be subject to oversized baggage fees.
Sandra Wang, product manager at Hawaiian Airlines, highlighted the significance of the update, stating, “Hawaii is synonymous with surfing and many outdoor activities that draw visitors from around the world. We are excited to extend this benefit to travelers and locals, making it easier for them to enjoy their favorite sports wherever they go in our network, including Asia, Oceania, and the U.S. mainland.”
The policy change also aligns Hawaiian Airlines with industry competitors such as Alaska Airlines and Qantas, which have introduced similar baggage rules to accommodate adventure-seeking travelers.
For inter-island flights, checked baggage fees remain $30 for the first bag and $50 for the second. On flights between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland, fees are $40 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second. Premium customers, Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard holders, and international travelers (excluding Australia and New Zealand) continue to enjoy free checked baggage allowances.
