Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center, initially established as Hawaii Children’s Museum of Art, Culture, Science, and Technology in December 1989, operated from a modest 5,000 sq ft storefront within the Dole Food Company cannery in Honolulu’s Iwilei industrial neighborhood. The museum’s inception coincided with the closure of the cannery in 1991. Despite serving approximately 250,000 visitors, the original museum closed its doors in 1994, marking the end of its first chapter.

In 1998, the museum underwent a transformative revival, reopening as Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center at the revamped site of the former Kewalo incinerator. This relocation was made possible through a 40-year lease with the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA). The revitalization process involved a USD 2 million investment by the HCDA to refurbish the abandoned incinerator, addressing environmental concerns and expanding the facility to 37,000 sq ft.

Today, Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center stands as a beacon of inspiration for children and families. Its mission is to encourage children to ‘dream big dreams’ and believe in their realization. The museum’s 5 fixed exhibits create an environment where children can explore and understand the world using their senses. The journey of the Center, from the ashes of an old incinerator to a vibrant educational hub, epitomizes its commitment to inspiring and educating keiki.

Embark on a journey through Rainforest Adventures, where children learn about the global significance of rainforests and their specific importance in Hawaii. This exhibit emphasizes the value of our natural resources and instills a sense of environmental responsibility. Additionally, Rainforest Adventures features a specially designed Little Explorers play area catering to children aged from birth to 3 years old. Please be aware that Rainforest Adventures closes 30 minutes earlier than the regular operational hours, with openings on Tuesday-Friday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and Saturday-Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm.

This interactive exhibit allows you to explore the functioning of a community and encourages creativity in choosing your desired roles. Your Town offers a unique opportunity to be anything you aspire to be.

Take an “inside look” at the intricacies of the human body in the Fantastic You exhibit. Gain insights into how different parts of your body collaborate to create the amazing entity that is you. To cater to younger visitors aged 5 and under, Fantastic You also houses the Tot Spot play area, providing a space for educational and entertaining exploration.

Immerse yourself in the unique aspects of living in Hawaii through the Hawaiian Rainbows exhibit. Experience life in Hawaii’s old plantation days by picking pineapples, running a general store, and more. Take a virtual journey to the outer islands on our Hawaiian Airlines airplane, load cargo on the container ship, and discover the rich cultural tapestry that makes Hawaii special.

This exhibit takes you on a trip to distant places, offering insights into the similarities and differences in lifestyles across various parts of the world.

Opt for a more immersive learning experience with Focused School Visits—a 90-minute, interactive program centered around one of the Center’s five educational exhibit galleries. Enjoy approximately 45 minutes of exploration in a selected gallery and another 45 minutes of educational programming tailored to that gallery’s theme.

• Dress Comfortably: With so much to explore, expect a lot of walking. Comfortable clothing and shoes are highly recommended.

From Tuesday to Friday, the Center welcomes visitors from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm for a delightful morning adventure. Note that the Center is closed on Mondays for maintenance and preparations for exciting events.

If you are traveling from Downtown Honolulu, take Ala Moana Boulevard and turn right onto Cooke Street. Continue on Cooke Street, then turn left onto Ilalo Street. Turn right onto Ohe Street, and the Center will be on your right.

The city’s efficient public transportation system, TheBus, offers several routes that stop near the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center.
